JM: What's your relationship to Michael
Douglas' character, Grady Tripp?
TM: I play a student of his who is a very gifted
writer. It's really his story, three days in his life. When we enter
the movie, his has wife left him, his lover's told him she's
pregnant, and his editor to whom he's owed a book for nine years has
just shown up. Oh, and a suicidal student falls into his lap for him
to look after. His life is just spinning a little bit - it's a big
weekend for him.
JM: What motivates you when choosing a script?
TM: Good people and good stories. And good characters -
I was telling somebody about the 4 Es. I want to entertain, educate,
elevate, and enlighten. Those are not bad things to consider.
JM: Are you bothered about reaching leading man status?
TM: I don't really know. I'm confident that my career's
going in a good direction so I'm not too worried. It's for other
people to put labels on, speculate, or write articles about. For me,
I'm just living my life and making my choices.
JM: How have you found the increasing pressures of
being in the public eye?
TM: Sometimes people can be intrusive. Sometimes you
don't really feel like having your picture taken, or meeting
somebody new. And you don't really have a choice. It's certainly a
challenge, and some things can be frustrating. I think it's
important to strengthen my core: what I am as a human being and who
I am.
