Maguire has designs on "Mr. Good Enough"

April 8, 2008

From:  Variety.com

Warner Independent and Tobey Maguire's Maguire Entertainment have acquired book and pic rights to the Atlantic Monthly article "Marry Him! The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough" by NPR commentator Lori Gottlieb.

Gottlieb will turn her article, which appeared in the March edition of the magazine, into a book for Dutton, "Marry Him! Finding Mr. Real."

Maguire will produce the pic, and Mark Ross will oversee the project for his shingle.

Gottlieb is a 40-year-old single mother who conceived her baby through donor sperm. Hardened by the responsibilities of raising a child alone, she posits that there is no such thing as a dream guy.

"Don't worry about passion or intense connection. Don't nix a guy based on his annoying habit of yelling 'Bravo!' in movie theaters. Overlook his halitosis or abysmal sense of aesthetics. Because if you want to have the infrastructure in place to have a family, settling is the way to go," Gottlieb wrote.

Maguire to adapt Red 5 Comics "Afterburn" for the big screen

March 27, 2008

From:  The Hollywood Reporter

Tobey Maguire and Neal Moritz are teaming up for "Afterburn," an adaptation of a comic book published by newbie company Red 5 Comics. Rights to the film are being picked up by Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media.

Maguire would produce through his Maguire Entertainment banner and Moritz through his Original Films shingle.

The book, whose first issue hit stands in January, is a sci-fi adventure set against the backdrop of a postapocalyptic Earth, whose Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who for the right price extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates along the way.

Red 5 Comics was created by Paul Ens, former director of Lucasfilm's StarWars.com and Lucas Online, and Scott Chitwood, co-founder of TheForce.net and contributor to ComingSoon.net and SuperHeroHype.com. The company, based in Calgary, Alberta, began publishing its first books in the fall.

No writer for the adaptation is on board.

Tropic Thunder Cameo Appearance

March 5, 2008

Tobey Maguire and Tom Cruise are reportedly making a cameo appearance in the upcoming Ben Stiller comedy flick "Tropic Thunder" which opens August 17 was both written and directed by Stiller and co-stars Jack Black, Steve Coogan, Nick Nolte,  and Robert Downey, Jr.  Here's an excerpt from a 03/05/08 first look article from EW.com:

The film marks Stiller's first directing effort since 2001's Zoolander. With Thunder, he takes aim at the sweetest target of all: actors. Downey plays one of a team of self-indulgent stars cast in the modern equivalent of Apocalypse Now. Stiller plays an action hero who has just adopted a baby from Asia but worries that ''all the good ones are gone.'' Black portrays a comedian known for performing multiple roles in a single film — his latest is called The Fatties: Fart 2. But when the film's director (Steve Coogan) and writer (Nick Nolte) get fed up with their prima donna cast, they drop them into the jungle to fend for themselves. The actors think they're doing some sort of full-immersion filmmaking, but the danger they're in is very real.

'Everything Changes' for Tobey Maguire

  October 5, 2007

Is everything about to change for Tobey Maguire? That seems to be the case, as director Peter Hedges revealed to MTV News that he’s lassoed the “Spider-Man” star for his next project, the appropriately titled “Everything Changes.”

While the film was first announced in 2004, it’s only now revving up thanks to a clear schedule for its director and star, Hedges said.

Based on a book by Jonathan Tropper, “Everything Changes” centers around “guy who had to take care of his family at a young age because his dad left,” Hedges explained. “His dad comes back and for one week he has the father of his dreams - he helps him figure out that he’s trying so hard not to be his father that he’s not being himself.”

While technically true, fans of the novel will tell you that it all comes out slightly off center - somewhat tweaked and comic. Which makes it the perfect fit for Hedges, the very funny guy who wrote “About a Boy,” “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” and the upcoming “Dan in Real Life.”

“It’ll be in the ‘Dan In Real Life’/'Gilbert’ vein,” he said of the film’s tone. “I’m very excited to work with Tobey. You’re going to see a great performance [from him]. I find him really smart and talented.”

  Maguire and Gyllenhaal considering "Brothers"

  September 18, 2007

Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal (pictured left with Jen Meyer at the 18th Annual Producer's Guild Awards) are in negotiations to star in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" for Relativity Media.

The film, a remake of Susanne Bier's Danish-language war drama, centers on a man (Maguire) who is sent to fight in Afghanistan while his black-sheep brother (Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife and child.

Bier's film, which was released in 2004, stars Connie Nielsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.  In the remake, which David Benioff is writing, Gyllenhaal would play the younger brother and Maguire the older one.  "Brothers" is scheduled to begin shooting in early November.

Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing alongside Michael De Luca and Joni Sighvatsson.   Relativity most recently produced the Russell Crowe-Christian Bale starrer "3:10 to Yuma," which recently opened at No. 1.

Gyllenhaal, whose credits include "Zodiac" and "Brokeback Mountain," most recently starred in "Rendition," which unspooled last week at the Toronto Film Festival.   Maguire is hot on the heels of Sony's "Spider-Man 3" and also recently appeared in "The Good German."

Maguire set to deliver 'Tokyo Suckerpunch';  Reteams with director Gary Ross

  September 12, 2007

WarKonnichi wa, Maguire-san.

Tobey Maguire, the star of three "Spider-Man" films that have generated more than $2.5 billion for Japanese corporate giant Sony, now has not one but two Japan-related projects in the works.

Warner Bros. announced Friday that it had purchased the film rights to "Robotech," an epic Japanese anime sci-fi series about giant robots on Earth, that Maguire will produce with Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") writing the screenplay.

But the delightfully titled "Tokyo Suckerpunch," which Maguire has been developing as producer and star for two years with screenwriter Ed Solomon ("Men in Black") and producers Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick ("Memoirs of a Geisha"), has also recently picked up momentum. Now it looks like the movie -- a romantic comedy/action/modern noir hybrid that uses live-action and anime -- will reunite Maguire with "Pleasantville" costar Reese Witherspoon and writer-director Gary Ross (pictured left with Maguire at 2003 Deauville Film Festival), who also directed him in "Seabiscuit."

"One of the most attractive things about it is that it combines anime with live action," says Ross, who mixed black-and- white and color footage as a thematic device in "Pleasantville," his 1998 directorial debut. "It presents a lot of stylistic opportunities in how you shoot the live action so that it works harmonically."

Sony acquired the rights to Isaac Adamson's poppy 2000 novel "Tokyo Suckerpunch: A Billy Chaka Adventure" in April 2005, but last month Ross became attached to develop another draft with Solomon that he will direct if it gets greenlighted. Adamson wrote several other Billy Chaka books -- "Hokkaido Popsicle," "Dreaming Pachinko" and "Kinki Lullaby" -- which open up the possibility of another franchise for Maguire.

A draft dated May 22, 2007, is a jaunty, unpredictable foray into the peculiar, pulsing Tokyo cityscape. Billy Chaka -- popular graphic novelist, Cleveland native and rabid Japanophile -- travels to Japan for the first time to attend the premiere of a cheesy movie made from his self-mythologizing work (in Adamson's novel, Chaka is a journalist for teen magazine Youth in Asia). There, he must contend with not only jarring culture shock but also mysterious fans, Dolph Lundgren (who stars as the movie Chaka) and a dangerous, mob-related kidnapping that starts to resemble one of his own crazy plots.

All, of course, while love-hate sparring with his cute and resourceful editor, Sarah, played by Witherspoon. Among the pleasures Solomon delivers are some laugh-out-loud but very black physical comedy, a tense but funny sojourn in a love motel and the prospect of hearing Witherspoon slip in and out of flawless Japanese.

"What Ed does so well is he captures that kind of 1930s male-female banter," Ross says.

Though Ross says he, Maguire and Witherspoon are all game to make the film, potential production depends mostly on Oscar winner Witherspoon's schedule -- she's committed to doing "Four Christmases" with Vince Vaughn this year -- and, of course, Solomon's rewrite.

Several stars, including Tobey Maguire and fiancée Jen Meyer, came out to the LA premiere of "The 11th Hour" to support the passionate effort of long-time pal Leo DiCaprio, who produced and narrated the Eco-documentary film.

The film addresses problems facing the planet, and encourages people to do their part in preserving the Earth's delicate eco-system.

Maguire cashes in at the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event

July 14, 2007

While on the Spidey 3 promo circuit Tobey Maguire couldn't get through sit-downs with late talkers Jay Leno and David Letterman without special mention of it.  It's been first hand knowledge in Hollywood circles and even by some of Vegas' famous personalities for quite some time. But now Maguire's poker prowess is no longer a secret to anyone, be it professional or average Joe, who follows the game closely.  In fact its almost laughable that Maguire still modestly downplays his abilities in public and then proceeds to outlast 95% of a field of 6,358, many seasoned veterans, some WSOP Bracelet holding pros in poker's biggest event.  Recently labeling himself a "good average player", Maguire survived into Day 4, on Event #55, World Championship Poker, No-Limit Hold'em, placing 292nd, and cashing in $39,445.  The event was held July 6 -17, 2007 at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.  Jerry Yang went on to claim the tournament's $8,250,000 championship purse and earn his first Bracelet, the WSOP's top prize.

2007 WSOP EVENT #55 NEWS & RECAP

Earlier in the month, Maguire earned $6,159, taking 66th place in Event #45, Six-Handed No Limit Hold'em at the Rio.   He has now cashed in three World Series of Poker events, his first being in 2005.

Pssssst.  Just don't tell anyone that Maguire can play.  He doesn't want anyone to know.

And please, no pictures. ;)

MMC Webmaster goes AWOL

May 4, 2007 - ???

Where is the elusive MMC Webmaster InsomniacFreak?  Since it is now May 4 and beyond, that's a pretty silly question.  She's likely huddled up in a dark theater right now soaking in the sights and sounds, in wild celebration of the end of a three-year abstinence from seeing Mr. Maguire on the big screen.  She can't be bothered about site updates now.  She's far too busy enjoying the moment.

And by the way, what are you doing here at MMC anyway?  Get yourself to the theater and see Spider-Man 3 right now!   He marches, struts, dances, kicks Goblin Jr. ass, cuts everyone down to size with snippish one liners and cattiness the likes of which you've never seen and yet he manages still to melt your heart with nerdish abandon and break it by filling you up with his sadness.  Warning:  You may laugh and you may cry.

Don't miss it!  Spider-Man 3, in THEATERS NOW!!!!!

Spider-man 3 featured on Sci Fi Magazine cover - June 2007

April 14, 2007

Sci Fi Magazine has published a blockbuster movie issue (June 2007) featuring symbiote Spidey on the cover.  There are several nice pictures and some great quotes from the cast, director and producers.

Topher Grace (Eddie Brock/Venom) had these words of high praise for Tobey.

He says. “Tobey was wonderful in this movie in terms of how brave he was to take a character that …obviously was so loveable…all over the world….and he goes to some really dark places with it. And, I mean, he really pulls it off.”  ...
I’d watch Tobey and go, “Oh, that looks like fun, swinging around.” But I…did, like, one one-hundredth of what he does on the film, and I just have a lot of respect for what he’s been doing for all of these years. Physically, it’s a whole sort of process.”

Tobey does Tokyo ;)

March 1, 2007

To promote his sex-appeal as well as the upcoming release on May 1, 2007 of Spider-man 3 in Sony's home country, Tobey traveled to Tokyo, Japan to attend a press conference with co-star James Franco and Spider-man 3 exec. producer Avi Arad.

Here's an excerpt from a nice new article  published by The Mainichi Daily News:

Tobey Maguire quipped to reporters in Tokyo on Thursday that he "just wanted to make sure I was looking really sexy" when it came to special preparations he had made for his title role in "Spider-man 3."

Like the one displayed here, the Mainichi publication has also provided a wonderful photo album from the conference.  It features several pics of Tobey clowning around with James Franco and Avi Arad and waving to likely a very enthusiastic crowd who will get first crack at seeing Spidey 3 on the bigscreen.

Maguire acquires rights to Gerald Fraller's Soul-Selling Story

January 29, 2007

Variety's Michael Fleming reports that Tobey Maguire has made a move to acquire the rights to adapt the soul-selling story of website entrepreneur/philanthropist Gerald Fraller into a feature motion picture.

Excerpt from Variety article below:

(Gerald) Fraller is brokering his soul in a lottery through his Winmysoul.com Web site, and his Web saga caught the attention of Tobey Maguire, who made a deal with him to adapt his story for the bigscreen. Maguire Entertainment's Maguire and Mark Ross will produce with Nash Entertainment's Bruce Nash and Robert Kosberg.

After his dream job in Taiwan didn't pan out, Fraller was an unemployed and depressed 28-year-old when he decided he needed a dramatic life change. He hatched the idea of selling his soul in order to finance the transformation. Fraller claims on his site to have received 3,690 bids and eight marriage proposals. He will name the winner by November and claims he'll donate some of the money to start a foundation to aid people suffering from depression.

Selling his soul is more than symbolic: Among other things, Fraller is promising a percentage of annual future earnings (minimum $500), the right to name future kids and the right to pen the inscription on his headstone.

Kosberg said Nash Entertainment and Maguire Entertainment joined forces after reading stories about Fraller's Web site. The producers aren't sure yet where they will take the story; they'll hire a writer and then try to set up the film at a studio.

"The story might be about someone who does this, and then learns it's perhaps not the best thing to sell one's soul," Kosberg said.

Tobey Maguire appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno"

December 15, 2006

Mr. Maguire made an appearance on the Friday, December 15, 2006 episode of The Tonight Show to promote his new film "The Good German".  Maguire confessed that it was fun to play a bad guy and that it was "a little different from Peter Parker".  During the show, Jay Leno presented Maguire with a couple of baby gifts, a "Hollywood Say N See" and a cute baby t-shirt with an image of Spidey kicking a guy that said "My Daddy can beat up your Daddy." (see image at left).

Maguire also discussed a bad bacon cheeseburger experience that led to his becoming a vegetarian.  He describes  the in-delivery-room experience of the birth of his newborn daughter on November 10,  their naming of the baby "Ruby Sweetheart" in honor of fiance' Jen Meyer's recently deceased grandmother, and how parenthood will impact his poker playing career.   Later, he recounts his frustration with the Lakers after the loss of Shaquille O'Neal and anecdotally recounts a trash-talking experience with the Super Sonic's Ray Allen which left him riddled with guilt afterward.

Screencaps like the one above are of the interview are up in the gallery here.

Spider-man featured on the cover of the January 2007 Empire Magazine

November 25, 2006

The New Look Spider-Man Speaks!
The cover of this issue was very nearly Empire’s Editor-At-Large, Chris Hewitt, dressed in figure-hugging Lycra. Such is the way with securing genuine world exclusives on genuine benchmark blockbusters: deadlines get broken, nerves get tested and, in certain darker moments, desperate back-up plans are hatched. Thankfully – for everyone, I think we can all agree – Sam Raimi pulled out all the stops, delivering some of the very first images from Spider-Man 3 and rounding up his cast for an amazing sneak peak inside the most anticipated movie of 2007. Sandman, Venom, Harry Osborn, Gwen Stacy, M.J. and Peter Parker himself… all swing by to discuss everything from catfights to killing tramps and “huge bazoombas” (thanks, Gwen) to the joys of seeing each other naked.

Sony Pictures celebrates Mr. Maguire's 31st birthday by releasing the Spider-man 3 Teaser Trailer

June 27, 2006

Happy Birthday to Tobey Maguire who turned 31 today!  To celebrate the aging of Peter Parker ;)... Sony Pictures released the first official teaser trailer for Spider-man 3

The trailer has been made available online via Apple.  It hit the big screen as a preview in front of select screenings of the film "Superman Returns"  which bowed in theaters on June 28, 2006.

The trailer is just a little over one minute long and a tantalizing taste of things to come, apparently a darker, more complex set of circumstances for Peter Parker to overcome.  The trailer seems to foretell that Parker will combat not only a new villain in Sandman and the reincarnation of Green Goblin but also the darkness within himself, no doubt a result of fusion with the symbiote which blackens not only Spider-man's suit but his outlook.  Following are some screencaps from the trailer.

Tobey Maguire is the Quiet Type

June 13, 2005

Tobey Maguire is in talks to star in and produce with Michael London the romantic comedy Quiet Type for New Line Cinema, says The Hollywood Reporter.  The story centers on an unassuming mute from a small town who moves to New York to pursue his dreams of conducting an orchestra. Adding a twist to the story and a special draw for Maguire, the character remains mute throughout the film.m.

Richard LaGravanese has just completed a short rewrite of Quiet Type, which New Line acquired in 2002 as a spec script from writer Rob Perez for London to produce. Martin Hynes followed on from Perez to write the draft, which got Maguire on board.

Maguire will most likely shoot the film after he finishes Spider-Man 3, which is scheduled for a May 4, 2007 release. This fall, he will shoot the Steven Soderbergh-helmed The Good German in which he plays a seemingly innocent soldier drawn into a murder mystery. He also recently signed on to star in and produce an adaptation of the Isaac Adamson novel Tokyo Suckerpunch for Columbia Pictures.
