Just thought I'd go ahead and create a news thread for Tobey's next film, The Good German, where Tobey is set to play an American Soldier Lt. Patrick Tully.

To start off, here is the official press release issued by Warner Brothers Pictures back in October 2005.

Press Release Source: Warner Bros. Pictures
Production Begins on Steven Soderbergh's ``The Good German,'' Starring George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire for Warner Bros. Pictures Thursday October 13, 1:28 pm ET

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 2005--Academy Award-winning director and producer Steven Soderbergh's ("Traffic") dramatic thriller "The Good German," starring George Clooney ("Good Night, and Good Luck"), Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett ("The Aviator") and Tobey Maguire ("Spider-Man 2"), commenced production on September 27th, it was announced today by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Based on the novel by Joseph Kanon, "The Good German" takes place in the ruins of post-WWII Berlin, where U.S. Army war correspondent Jake GGeismar (George Clooney) becomes embroiled with Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett), a former lover whose missing husband is the object of a manhunt by both the American and Russian armies. Intrigue mounts as Jake tries to uncover the secrets Lena may be hiding in her desperation to get herself and her husband out of Berlin. Tully (Tobey Maguire), a soldier in the American army motor pool assigned to drive Jake around Berlin, has black market connections that may be Lena's way out -- or lead them all into even darker territory.

A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation in association with Virtual Studios, a Section 8 production, "The Good German" is directed by Steven
Soderbergh and produced by Ben Cosgrove ("Good Night, and Good Luck") and Gregory Jacobs ("Ocean's Twelve"). Benjamin Waisbren is the executive producer and Fred Brost ("Ocean's Twelve") serves as co-producer. The screenplay is written by Paul Attanasio ("Poseidon"), based on the novel by Joseph Kanon. Philip Messina ("Ocean's Twelve") serves as production designer and Louise Frogley ("Syriana") is the costume designer.

"The Good German" is being filmed on location in Los Angeles, and is scheduled for release in 2006 by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

There are a couple of George Clooney sites that have been following the activity on this film pretty closely and are great resources for monitoring news on this film.

Clooneystudio.com has a page dedicated to the film. Check the following for great summary details on cast, synopses.

Clooneynetwork.com has several pages devoted to TGG, with articles and a photo album.

Clooneystudio.com reports a November 22, 2006 release date for "The Good German".
The change from the previously circulated release date of September 2006 seems to be echoed by boxofficemojo.com.

November 22, 2006!!!! That's going to seem like an eternity. Oh well. Do you think they are purposely waiting to november because it is a better time for an oscar nod?
This seems like the kinda movie that will be in contention. What do you all think?

I expect that it might well be an Oscar worthy endeavor. Given that the supposed release date is only 6 months away and we've heard so little buzz on it makes me a bit concerned.

Of course, maybe I need to wratchet back my expectations. It's kind of hard to do since Tobey's last three projects (SM, Seabiscuit, SM2) generated such enormous buzz and interest so far in advance. They were each event type films. No matter what kind of interest gets stimulated for TGG, it will never touch that of those other projects.

Makes me wonder how it will seem to Tobey when TGG comes out and the hoopla is so far removed from that of Spidey and Seabiscuit. I mean, I know he probably has already mentally prepared himself for it and has the right perspective and all. But just seems like it would be such a let down. It will be the first time in a long, long while that people aren't literally lining the streets to see his films. After having THREE FILMS IN A ROW exceed the 100 million mark and make waves with the public and critics alike, Tobey will be jolted back to normalcy with a low fanfare film like this.

And me the movie going public will have such a small window to get my butt to the theatre and watch it. I became quite spoiled to having Tobey's films stay in theatres for months. MONTHS!!!! I mean SM2 hit theatres June 30, 2004. I last saw it IN THEATRES in February 2005 (at the dollar threatre but still, wow wow wow!). Seabiscuit had quite a long run too as I recall.

Anyway, I am still pained at having to endure a black and white film after such a long drought. But, I remind myself that in my head Tobey will have plenty of color as my mind will easily fill in the missing RGB values from memory..Wink

Anyway. LOL!

Even though Tobey is a supporting actor. It sounds like he will still have a lot of screen time. At least his name is listed 3rd.

Thanks, MJ

'Tis going to be great. Finally, a cultured movie is in our midst, such as Seabiscuit. I'm so sick of these movies that seem entertaining such as X-Men. Everyone makes such a big deal out of them, and people ask me if I've seen the third one. I haven't. I haven't even seen the first two. Oh my god. LOL! STOP ASKING ME!!! Even a customer asked me, and highly recommended it. I said "okay". It was pretty funny.

Looks like The Good German release date has been pushed back to December 8, 2006.  The following site states that it will have a limited release.

http://www.boxofficeprophets.com/tickermaster/listing.cfm?TMID=2347

The release date is echoed by BoxOffice Mojo who is now listing the film with an R rating.  No surprise there being a War Drama.

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=goodgerman.htm

I have mixed feelings about the limited release status.  Of course I'll be just devasted if it never makes it to my area and I have to wait months longer to view it on DVD.  However,  sometimes the limited release tactic is employed to attract Oscar nominations.  The Academy seems to like films that aren't highly popular at the box office (with some notable exceptions in LOTR and Titanic, etc.), not that a b&w film such as this will do well at the ticket counter anyway but Good Night and Good Luck was sparsely viewed and look what happened for it.  Lots of praise as a high quality film.

Anyway, I still can't wait to see this.
